September 2018

Exercise Book is a small artist’s book series that references ‘the desirability and potential of the school jotter’. The book is made of four pages of Bible paper (Offenbach Bible paper 40gsm) that are interleaved with four pages of blue carbon copy paper.

Each book I produce in this series is an exercise in attempting to draw neatly and precisely. I draw tightly packed lines with a HB pencil and a metal rule on the topmost open pages, and as I draw, the carbon paper copies my drawing in real-time, complete with all its mistakes and variation to the seven pages below.

When I draw an Exercise Book I create a perfomative record of drawing that automatically and simultaneous records itself. The form and format plays with ideas of copying, repetition, skill, craft and making mistakes.

I have exhibited versions of Exercise Book at Malmö Artist’s Book Biennial 2018 and at the Tetley, Leeds for the 21st International Contemporary Artists’ Book Fair. Exercise Book has been selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2018.

The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2018 exhibition was launched and the award winners announced on Wednesday 26 September at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London.
